I had been running forever, but I couldn’t stop. I didn’t want to stop. It felt amazing, and I felt alive.

I allowed my body to pulse with the negativity and hate that seemed to be burning with energy and building as I ran. My veins filled with molten lava and pulsed with urgency. My blood burned as I allowed it to take control. As the trees began to thin, I saw a large clearing ahead. Just then, I tripped over my feet as my vision blurred, and my joints began to shift under my skin. The pain came in uncontrollable waves, and the nausea was unbearable as my spine contorted and changed form.

I lay prone on the ground, allowing the cool earth to soothe me as the pain subsided. I slowly opened my eyes, seeing the world with a crisp new clarity. I took a deep breath and jerked back as I smelt the sickness that I’d left in the grass. I landed on four paws, not feet.

What?

I turned in circles, trying to see all of myself. Is that a tail? What is happening? I nearly made myself sick again, chasing my tail in circles.

My examination came to a crashing halt as my ears perked up, and I looked around the clearing. A growl, guttural and deadly, made every hair on my body rise. A frightened noise left my throat.

I needed to run. But instead, my heart pounded, and I stood like a deer in headlights, unable or unwilling to look away from the sound.

It emerged from the clearing on the other side, slow and proud. As the moon surrounded its massive frame, sparkles of silver intensified the already beautiful animal. I had never seen anything like it. It was a Wolf, the form was undeniable as it stepped into the moonlight. I didn’t need a closer look to know I was in trouble. I forced myself back to my feet and darted into the woods I had just emerged from.

I heard the footsteps closing in behind me and I pushed my legs faster, stumbling as I did so. The new dexterity on my four legs produced speed and agility that allowed me to leap and bob through the trees with great efficiency. I heard a growl erupt from behind me, and I turned my head to look. A serious mistake, as when I turned back to the path, I was unable to dodge an old pine tree that was twice as wide as I was. A yip escaped me as I crashed into the enormous tree trunk.

A flash of silvery white fur filled my vision before I succumbed to the pain that erupted in my head and dragged me down into darkness.
